Olive Press – Mani, Southern Peloponnesia, Greece

December 13, 2011

Below are photos of an olive press in Mani, Southern Peloponnese, Greece. The area is known for producing the best extra virgin olive oil in the world, soft-pressed from partially ripened olives of the Koroneiki variety. Olives are organically grown on mountain terraces, close to the sea, surrounded by wild thyme, oregano and sage. The local honey is also of superior quality.

Olives are harvested this time of year (early winter). After harvest trees are pruned. The trees in this area are managed much lower then in other areas of Greece, possibly due to their proximity to the ocean and exposure to wind, or for ease in harvesting, or both.
