Messene ruins – Southwest Peloponnese, Greece

Here are some photos I took at the ruins of the large classical city-state of Messene, located about 16 miles north of Kalamata. Today’s Ancient Messene was constructed over the ancient city of Ithome, built by the Achaean Greeks, which was abandoned for sometime after being destroyed by the Spartans.

Wow, nice. Yes, it was a great place. Interesting to wander around and think about history. I was especially impressed by the massive stone wall on the outskirts of the city. Incredible masonry. You don’t see anything even approaching that level of skill in modern stone masonry.
