Sustainable Prisons Program at Evergreen University

December 5, 2010

I have just become aware of Evergreen University’s Sustainable Prisons Program. It’s one of the more interesting socio-ecological education and reform initiatives I’ve heard about recently. I came across the site through a related story the PBS website, which offers a good overview of the program.

The Sustainable Prison Program mission statement, quoted from their website: “Our mission is to reduce the environmental, economic and human costs of prisons by training offenders and correctional staff in sustainable practices. Equally important, we bring science into prisons by helping scientists conduct ecological research and conserve biodiversity through projects with offenders, college students and community partners.”
