Sterculiaceae, Herrania purpurea, monkey cacao

January 19, 2010

Herrania purpurea is a close relative of Cacao (Theobroma cacao), and is endemic to Costa Rica and Panama. Increasingly rare in the wild, I have collected it in the dry tropical forests of the Pacific coast as well as in the perennially wet forests on along the Northern Caribbean. Like cacao, H. purpurea has a sweet edible pulp. The seeds are used by indigenous peoples to make a cacao drink.
