Rubiaceae, Calycophyllum candidissimum, Lluvia de plata, Madroño, Alazano

December 4, 2009

Madroño is the national tree of Nicaragua. It can grow up to around 40 m in height. Bark is brown with small, pinkish, light brown exfoliating spots.

The tree is occasionally used as an ornamental. The blooms kind of remind me of white flowered dogwood.

The wood is strong, dense and of good quality, used for charcoal, tool handles, furniture and construction in rural areas.
