Scientific name: Hylocereus spp.

Family: Cactaceae 

Origin and distribution: The Pitaya finds its origins in semi-humid regions of Mexico, Central America and the Antillas where it is commonly cultivated.  

Uses: The fruit is eaten fresh and has a very agreeable flavor, it can also be used in refreshments and sorbets. It can also be planted as an ornamental.  

Nutrition: Pitaya contains 5% sugar and is rich in phosphorous (36 mg for every 100g). Climate and soil: Pitaya thrives in hot, humid climates and requires well drained soils.
